ALVANCE green transport move to save 56,000 road kilometres

ALVANCE Aluminium Duffel has implemented a new scheme which will see it transporting aluminium rolled products by barge to the port of Antwerp. The sustainable transport initiative will reduce the company’s road transport activity destinated for the Port of Antwerp by 72 %, saving no less than 56,000 road kilometres a year.

Sustainability is at the heart of ALVANCE’s activities and this project will contribute to their efforts of reducing the CO2 footprint of their products. By switching to barges the company will save around 62 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, which is the equivalent of 16 Flemish households, making the company’s supply chain even more sustainable.

To implement the scheme ALVANCE has teamed up with the Hutchison terminal (TCT) in Willebroek and Multimodaal.Vlaanderen. Empty 20′ containers are provided by the terminal and loaded at Duffel. Afterwards, they are delivered back to TCT for transport by barge.

“ALVANCE is very aware of the social impact of its transport, both in terms of road congestion around Antwerp and CO2 emissions,” says Brahim El Boussatati, Shipping & Warehousing Manager at ALVANCE Aluminium Duffel. “By partnering with TCT and Multimodaal.Vlaanderen, we were able to participate in this multimodal alternative involving barges and in so doing replace a significant number of road journeys which is better for the environment and local traffic! A great example of a sustainable solution adding value to our products and positively impacting our community.”
